Same Day Dental Implants

Tooth loss can not only affect your confidence but also disrupt your daily routine. Without a full set of teeth, it is difficult to enunciate clearly and chew comfortably. Whether you are missing a single tooth, several teeth, or a full dental arch, same day dental implants provide an immediate solution. While traditional dental implants require a three to six month healing period, same day implants and restorations can restore the full form and function of your smile in a single visit.

Using the All-on-4® system, a full dental arch can be supported by four implant posts.

How Do Same Day Dental Implants Work?

Advanced 3-D scans and digital planning software make same day dental implants possible. With this revolutionary technology, the dentist can map out the best location for implant placement, and improve the predictability of treatment. The dentist can also create a digital model of your mouth, which will be used to fabricate your restoration. During surgery, your dentist will not only place the dental implants but also attach the abutments, which serve to connect the implants to the restorations. As a result, the dentist can attach a temporary restoration immediately after surgery.

After same day dental implants treatment, you should be able to speak clearly, smile confidently, and chew more comfortably.

One of the more popular brands of same day dental implants is known as All-on-4®. Using only four strategically placed implant posts, the dentist can often replace an entire arch of teeth on the same day as surgery.

Determining Candidacy

During the initial consultation, your dentist will perform a series of x-rays to determine whether you are a candidate for same day dental implants. As implants are placed directly into the jawbone, sufficient bone density is crucial to the success of your treatment. If you have sustained jawbone atrophy following tooth loss, your dentist may recommend a bone graft or sinus lift prior to the procedure. While preliminary treatments may extend your overall treatment timeline by several months, they can ensure a stronger, healthier foundation for implant posts. You may be a candidate for same day implants if you:

  • Have mild to extensive tooth loss
  • Are looking for an alternative to a traditional dental bridge, partial denture, or full arch denture
  • Are in good oral health and free from periodontal disease
  • Have a strong and stable jawbone
  • Do not smoke
  • Do not have health issues that would compromise your rate of healing

Your dentist can review your unique oral health needs and goals and recommend the best form of treatment for you.

Benefits of Same Day Dental Implants

Leaving with your implants and restorations secured can offer several excellent benefits. After treatment, you should be able to speak clearly, smile confidently, and chew more comfortably. In addition, temporaries can improve the aesthetics of your smile, so there is no need to feel self-conscious while you await your final restorations. You will also never have to worry about your implant-supported restorations slipping out of place when you eat or speak, as they are affixed to the implant posts.

One of the most important advantages of dental implants is their ability to preserve the jawbone. After tooth loss, the jawbone no longer receives stimulation from the tooth roots and can begin to deteriorate. Implant posts mimic the tooth roots and stimulate the jaw, promoting bone regrowth and preventing more widespread tooth loss as well as structural issues.

Recovering from Treatment

It is important to remember that same day dental implants will heal similarly to traditional implant posts. Over a three to six month period, the implants will fuse with the jawbone in a process called osseointegration. In order to avoid disrupting healing, you should:

  • Maintain a soft foods diet and refrain from eating hard-to-chew foods, such as raw vegetables, nuts, and chips for about six to eight weeks
  • Avoid smoking, as this can slow the healing process
  • Attend follow-up appointments as directed
  • Use gentle brushing and flossing techniques

After you have fully healed, you can return to the office to receive your final restoration. Before affixing the restoration to the implant, the dentist will check to ensure it fits comfortably and securely in your smile and does not interfere with your bite. Should no adjustments be necessary, the dentist can affix the restoration to the implant posts and polish your smile to add the finishing touches.
